Description:    Born in Germany in 1857, Louis Wessbecher completed course work at the Polyclinic of Karlsruhe and the Institute of Stuttgart before emigrating to the United States in 1882. In St. Louis, Wessbecher developed an important architectural practice based on ecclesiastical work, particularly churches for ethnic parishes. These included St. Engelbert, St. Stanislaus Kostka and St. Augustine Roman Catholic Churches and Bethlehem Lutheran (Missouri Synod) Church in Hyde Park.
