Description:    Johann Adam Lemp, born in Germany, was known as Adam. In 1838 he emigrated to St. Louis and established A. Lemp & Company, a local family grocery.

With the influx of Southern Germans, Lemp began manufacturing vinegar and brewing beer. He eventually concentrated exclusively on beer brewing. In 1840, he opened the Western Brewery, which was located at 37 South Second Street at Walnut. Lemp and his wife, Justine, had one son, William, who was born in Germany two years before they moved to St. Louis. [Final Resting Place, p. 91]
