Description:    Martha Fischel was the founder of the Ethical Society and was also influential in broadening the scope of The Wednesday Club. The Wednesday Club originally started as a method of cultural enrichment and learning; the women met in homes to discuss the poetry of Percy Shelley. The Club eventually expanded to include social action projects, such as smoke abatement (from chimneys and factories).
