Detailed Description:
Born in North Carolina in 1782, Henry Atkinson entered the US Army in 1808 as a captain, and served as a colonel in the War of 1812. Atkinson became a commander in the West and led expeditions in 1819 and 1825 to the Yellowstone River. He was general commander of forces during the Black Hawk War and later superintended the removal of the Winnebago tribe to Iowa. He was Commander of Jefferson Barracks from 1826 until his death in St. Louis of dysentery on June 14, 1842. Construction of the Barracks was begun under his leadership.
