Description:    Joseph Rosati was appointed the coadjutor bishop of Louisiana in 1823, and became full bishop in 1826 when Bishop Dubourg resigned. He became the first bishop of St. Louis when the pope split the Louisiana diocese in two. The southern half became the Diocese of New Orleans, and the upper half became the Diocese of St. Louis.
