Description:    On March 25, 1980, John May was installed as archbishop of St. Louis, replacing the retiring John Cardinal Carberry. While archbishop, he was appointed to the presidency of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops.

May was born in Chicago and began his seminary training there. He was ordained a priest on May 3, 1947. While in Chicago, he worked as a parish priest, hospital chaplain and a bishop. [Final Resting Place, p. 201]
