People Name: Bixby, William Profession: Business Person Born/Started: Jan. 02, 1857 Died/Ended: Oct. 29, 1931 Description: William Bixby was born in Michigan and began working for a Texas railroad line at the age of 16. He moved to St. Louis to work as a purchasing agent when the Missouri Pacific Railroad bought out the Texas railroad line. He eventually went to work for the American Car and Foundry Company and rose to the position of chairman of the board. He ultimately became president of the Laclede Gas Light Company. Bixby was very involved in various civic organizations. He was president of the Art Museum and the Missouri Historical Society, director of the Public Library, a board member with St. Luke´s hospital, and an original incorporator of the American Red Cross.
