During the war, Stimson was in charge of St. Louis Base Hospital Unit 21, one of six mobile hospitals organized and equipped by the Red Cross. Unit 21 arrived in France in June 1917 to relieve British medical personnel. The St. Louis unit was the second unit to go overseas under the command of the War Department. Although Unit 21 was in France for less than a year, the women treated 62,400 casualties. |
