|   | People Name: Berger, Mother Mary Odilia Profession: Medicine Description: Mother Mary Odilia Berger, a 49-year-old Bavarian nun, immigrated to America with five other nuns, all refugees of the Franco-Prussian war. They arrived in St. Louis just as smallpox was spreading through the City. She formed a new order, the Sisters of St. Mary, and established St. Mary´s Infirmary on a lot at 15th and Papin Streets. The Sisters of St. Mary became the city´s primary providers of public health care. |
