Description:    Mary Ellen Tucker was matron of the Mission Free School from 1875 to 1888. The school was an orphanage that also operated as a neighborhood settlement house and informal referral center. Children were often brought to the home by relatives that could not care for them. Tucker arranged for the children to be adopted or bonded out to work.
