Description:    Bettie Broadhead was a volunteer for the LadiesĀ“ Union Aid Society (LUAS), which provided supplies and care for wounded soldiers, prisoners, and refugees in St. Louis during the Civil War. She organized a special diet kitchen in 1862 at Benton Barracks, a huge hospital complex located at the fairgrounds west of Grand Avenue.
