Founded in 1864, the Holy Cross Catholic Church was a mixed Irish-German congregation. The Irish formed their own church in 1872, and broke from Holy Cross. Peter Wigger, pastor of Holy Cross, went to Cologne, Germany to recruit architects Rudell and Odenthal to design the church. Father Wigger presented a model of the church to the 1904 World´s Fair competition. He won $1,000, which he gave toward the building fund. Construction was completed in 1904.
