His best-known building in St. Louis is the German Gothic St. Francis de Sales Church at 2663 Ohio. It was built in 1907 from his modification of plans by the German architect Englebert Seibertz. Born in Alsace-Lorraine, Klutho came to St. Louis with his family at age 12. His long career began in 1885 as a carpenter; by 1887, he had formed a partnership with Frederick Boeke. During the 1890s, Klutho & Boeke were triple-listed in the city directory under Architects, Architects & Superintendents, and Builders. In 1900, he began an independent practice of architecture and was licensed to practice architecture in Illinois by 1902. |
