Description:    Born in 1856 in Fredricksburg, VA, L. Cass Miller studied architecture in England before returning to the United States to study under architect Henry R. Searle. Around 1879, Miller joined the office of Stephen D. Hatch in New York and, still as a member of Hatch’s team, relocated to St. Louis as supervising architect of the Merchants’-Laclede Building. Upon its completion, Miller remained in St. Louis where he continued to practice architecture.
