Name:    Valentine, Father
Category:  Demographics (immigration, etc.), Religion
Description:    Fr. Valentine was a Capuchin priest who was the first resident priest in St. Louis. He arrived in May 1772 and remained until 1774, when he returned to New Orleans with the Spanish garrison for which he was the chaplain. During his stay in St. Louis, Fr. Valentine developed plans to construct the village’s first church, which was to be located on a site selected by Auguste Chouteau a decade earlier. The plans were delayed by Valentine’s departure, however, and it was not until May 1776 that the church was finally completed. (Primm, 32)
