Name:    Helmpler, Franz Georg
Profession:  Architect
Description:    Franz Georg Helmpler designed the German Gothic Revival style church, SS. Peter and Paul, which still stands as a landmark in the Soulard neighborhood. Built in 1875, the church once held 1,700 people, but renovations in 1984 reduced that number to 400. The church’s stained glass windows are imported from Innsbruck and its stations of the cross from Beuron, Germany. The church’s spire rises 214 feet.
