Description:    Lucy Delaney was born a slave in St. Louis but gained her freedom in February 1844 when her mother sued for freedom on the grounds that she had been kidnapped from a free state. Since the child of a free woman could not be a slave, Lucy´s mother also sued for legal possession of her child. Both gained their freedom as a result. When Delaney married ,she became part of the black middle class. She published her autobiography, From the Darkness Cometh the Light; or Struggles for Freedom.
