Description:    Lillie Rose Ernst began her career as a botany teacher at Central High School. She also served as principal of several schools and as the first female assistant superintendent of instruction for the St. Louis Public Schools. She was very outspoken and her appointment as assistant superintendent was controversial. However, she implemented procedures to improve retention and advocated a pension plan for retired teachers.
