Description:    Ira C. Divol was an early school superintendent and founder of the public library system. In 1860, Divoll, then the superintendent of St. Louis Public Schools, proposed to the Missouri legislature the establishment of a library as an integral part of the public school system. The Public School Library Society was created by the Missouri legislature on February 3, 1865 with Divoll as its first librarian.
