Description:    Roy Wilkins was born in Mill Creek Valley in St. Louis. He joined the NAACP in 1931 as assistant executive secretary and later became editor of The Crisis magazine, the NAACP´s official publication. In 1955, he became executive director of the NAACP, a post he held until 1977. His record on behalf of rights for black people, earned him the title of Mr. Civil Rights.
