Description:    John W. Wheeler was editor of the St. Louis Palladium, one of the most successful black newspapers in the late 1800s. He served as editor of the newspaper from 1897 to 1911. An advocate for black advancement through industry and self-reliance, Wheeler shied away from the politics of confrontation and refused to abandon the Republican Party when others of his race were doing so in the late 1890s and early 1900s.
