Description:    Captain Wendell Oliver Pruitt was a Sumner High School graduate who grew up in the Ville neighborhood. He was a World War II flying ace and won the Distinguished Flying Cross. Captain Pruitt was killed in 1945 in a plane crash while training new pilots at Tuskegee Air Force Base in Alabama. The Pruitt Military Academy at 1212 North 22nd Street is named in his honor, as well as the Pruit-Igoe Housing Project.
