Description:    Gwen Giles served as the director of the Civil Rights Enforcement Agency of the City of St. Louis, Missouri state senator, and St. Louis assessor. She began her public life as a member of the staff of the St. Louis Council of Human Relations. She later became the director of the Civil Rights Enforcement Agency of the City of St. Louis. In a special election held in December 1978, she was elected to the Missouri State Senate to fill the seat vacated by the Honorable Franklin Payne. In September 1981, she was appointed by Mayor Vincent Schoemehl to the post of St. Louis City Assessor. She is remembered by her peers as one of the most astute politicians in Missouri.
