Name:    Calloway, Ernest

Born/Started:    1909
Description:    Ernest Calloway is a past president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), a research director for the Teamsters Union, and a professor of urban studies at Saint Louis University.

The son of a West Virginia political activist and union organize, Mr. Calloway came to St. Louis in 1950 and followed in his father’s footsteps. He joined the Teamsters Local 888 and was research director for the Teamsters for 23 years. During the 1950s and 1960s, he was active in CORE (Congress of Racial Equality) and served as president of the St. Louis chapter of the NAACP from 1955 to 1969. He retired from his Teamsters’ position to become professor of urban studies at Saint Louis University.
