Name:    Angleou, Maya
Born/Started:    1928
Description:    Maya Angelou was born in St. Louis. As an adult, Angelou worked as an actress, journalist, author, and civil rights activist. Her 1970 autobiography, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, describes her early childhood. In 1993, she was Reynolds professor of American Studies at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC. On January 20, 1993, she read her poem, "On the Pulse of the Morning," at the inauguration of President William J. Clinton.
