People Name: Aldridge, Ira Category: African-American Experience, Cultural Life Born/Started: 1805 Died/Ended: 1867 Description: Ira Aldridge was an internationally famous black actor in the 1860s, known for his Shakespearean roles. He performed throughout Europe and was awarded medals by the kings of Prussia and Austria for his great talent. Aldridge died before he could undertake the American tour he had planned shortly after the Civil War. The Baden Colored School in St. Louis was renamed in his honor in 1890.
