Description:    Martin R. Delany was a African-American physician, author, newpaper publisher and activist. The grandson of a slave brought over from West Africa, he was active in the Underground Railroad and was the first black commissioned field officer in the Union Army in the Civil War. Mr. Delany studied medicine at Harvard College.
