Event:
  St. Patricks Day Parade Started
Brief Description:  The modern era of St. PatrickĀ“s Day parades in St. Louis began in 1970. Despite the snow, the 1970 parade was a huge civic success and has continued ever since. The parade is held on the Saturday prior to St. Patricks Day, with a dance following. A dignitary from Ireland is always invited to preside. In 1979 a five-mile run was added for the morning of the parade. A second parade, sponsored by the Ancient Order of Hibernians, takes place on St. PatrickĀ“s Day in the Southwest St. Louis neighborhood known as Dogtown.
