  Knights of Liberty founded
Brief Description:  A secret society, known as the Knights of Liberty, was formed by Reverend Moses Dickson in 1843 to enlist and arm southern slaves for a general rebellion. At one point the group claimed to have 47,000 members. The group set the year 1856 as the time for revolution. As the year approached, however, Dickson felt certain there would be a civil war, so he counseled his followers to wait. When the war did come, many took up arms for the Union cause.
