Separation of St. Louis City from County
Brief Description:  St. Louis City separated from St. Louis County in 1876, as authorized in the revised Missouri Constitution of 1875. The separation made St. Louis City one of the first cities in the U.S. to freeze its boundaries. Prior to 1876, the City┬┤s boundaries expanded five times, which enlarged its size from the original three-quarters of a square mile to the current sixty-one square miles [168].
