Event: Transit Workers Strike Brief Description: Streetcar workers went on strike in 1900 to try to gain a 10-hour day and to reinstate workers who had been fired for union activity. The street railway owners brought in strikebreakers from Cleveland. A "posse comitatus" was appointed to maintain order. The north and south sides of the city supported the strikers, while the wealthy west of Grand did not. The posse and the strikers fought on June 10, leaving three people dead and 14 wounded. The strike was broken on September 10. Year: 1900 Decade: 1900 - 1909 Beginning Date: 1900 Ending Date: 1900 |
