  Construction of Christ Church Cathedral Begins

Brief Description:  The original congregation of Christ Church Episcopal was organized in 1819; the original church was located at the corner of Third and Chestnut. The Reverend Montgomery Schuyler became rector of Christ Church in 1854. He selected the site for the present church at Twelfth and Locust Sts. Construction began in 1854 and was completed at a cost of $235,000. The first service was conducted in the new church in 1867.
