Brief Description:  Joseph Charless issued the first newspaper west of the Mississippi, the Missouri Gazette and Louisiana Advertiser. It was later called the Missouri Republican. The newspaper reported on national and local news, published advertisements, commentaries, and literary works of private citizens and businessmen. It published its last issue in 1919.
