Event:  First Police Captain appointed
Brief Description:  St. Louis´ first police captain, Mackey Wherry, was appointed in 1818 at a salary of $400 per year. Two men were added to the citizens patrol, and an assistant chief and constable were hired for night duty. The police captain was discharged in 1819 due to budget concerns.
