Event:  Smoke-Abatement Law Enacted

Brief Description:  A stiff smoke-abatement law was enacted in 1940 in response to 1939´s infamous "Black Tuesday" when smoke and pollution blotted out the mid-day sun in St. Louis. The smoke abatement law prohibited the burning of soft coal.
