  Mystic Order of the Veiled Prophet Formed

Brief Description:  The Mystic Order of the Veiled Prophet was a typical fraternal organization of the Guilded Age: a voluntary organization and social club that raised money for causes around the city. Formed in 1878, the Veiled Prophet was the most exclusive of these clubs. The order held their first annual celebration that year when Alonso and Charles Slay bought all the decorations and costumes used at Mardi Gras and convinced St. Louis businessmen to hold an annual event modeled after Mardi Gras.
