Event: General Strike of 1877 Category: Economy/Employment Brief Description: Labor strikes around the nation eventually led to a general strike in St. Louis on July 25, 1877 that shut down the City. Workers marched through the streets, and as they passed, others poured out of the buildings to join them. In general, the marches and strike were peaceful, except for isolated cases of vandalism. The marches lasted for a week, and shut down almost all of the manufacturing plants and saloons. Food supplies in the City also were diminished.
