Event: Metrolink Opens Brief Description: Bi-State Development Agency (BSDA), the greater St. Louis area transit authority, opened Metrolink, the regionĀ“s first rapid transit line, in 1993. The light-rail line, with its first sixteen stations, connected St. Louis City with St. Louis and St. Clair counties in Missouri and Illinois. The line reused the lower deck of the Eads Bridge, late 19th century tunnels under downtown St. Louis, and the Wabash rail right-of-way from Mill Creek Valley to the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Additional stations were added at Lambert Airport and the east riverfront in 1994, and at the East Terminal of the airport in 1998. In 2001, eight additional stations were added with the St. Clair County extension of Metrolink to Belleville, IL. An additional two stations are planned to continue the St. Clair County extension to Mid-America Airport. Meanwhile, a Cross-County extension to Clayton-Shrewsbury is planned for 2005.
