People Name: Wherry, Mackey Category: Human and Social Services Description: Mackey Wherry was named the City’s first police captain in 1818. He was paid $400 per year. At the time of his appointment, two additional police patrolmen were also added to the City’s force, along with an assistant captain and a constable for night duty. An evening curfew of 9 p.m. was set, and anyone found outside his or her own property after that time was subject to a $5 fine. Wherry served only one year as captain before being discharged due to the perceived high cost of maintaining the position.. (Primm, 98) |
