McKinley was first nominated for the presidency at the 1896 Republican National Convention that was held in St. Louis. He was an enthusiastic supporter of the planned Louisiana Purchase Exposition and, in August 1901, issued a proclamation urging "all Nations of the Earth to take part in the Commemoration of the Purchase of the Louisiana Territory, an event of great interest to the United States and of abiding effect on their development."
