  Plaza Square Renewal

Brief Description:  Plaza Square, the first Urban Renewal programs for the City, began in 1954 with the demolition of blighted properties two blocks northwest of City Hall. Late in 1953, on their second attempt, the voters of St. Louis had passed a bond issue to fund the redevelopment of Plaza Square. The 936-units of the Plaza Square Apartments were completed in 1961 at a cost of $22 million. The Plaza Square project was declared completed in 1962. As the first of St. LouisĀ“ Urban Renewal Programs, it provided the impetus for the City to continue the task of rebuilding.
