Event: Dec. 25, 1927 - "Black Christmas" Brief Description: Air pollution in St. Louis had existed for many years as a result of the burning of soft coal. On Christmas Day, 1927, the pollution was so bad that residents were forced to burn candles at midday because the smoke blotted out the sun. The day became known as "Black Christmas."
