  Marie Chouteau Arrives in St. Louis

Brief Description:  Marie Therese Chouteau, Pierre Laclede´s mistress, arrived in St. Louis from New Orleans with her children in 1764. She was the first white woman to settle in St. Louis. She controlled and directed Laclede´s affairs in St. Louis during his many absences and, after his death, she became more involved in fur trading, made extensive investments, and acquired a great deal of property.
