Event: United Railways Company Started Brief Description: The United Railways Company was formed in 1898 by consolidating all of the city´s streetcar franchises into one company, which later became the St. Louis Transit Company. In 1898 the City enacted the Central Traction bill, which granted public franchises for streetcar operations. The United Railways Company was formed soon after under suspicious circumstances. Public outcry over the unscrupulous manner in which this monopolistic charter was granted led to a grand jury investigation and indictment.
