  Publication of the Observer
Brief Description:  The Observer was published by Elijah P. Lovejoy, a white abolitionist newspaperman. His paper frequently editorialized against slavery. The public responded with outrage and his printing presses were destoyed several times. Lovejoy eventaully moved to Alton, IL, but attacks on his paper and facilities followed him there. He was murdered in 1837. [76-77]
