  Gasconade Bridge Collapses
Brief Description:  Thirty-one of St. Louis´ leading citizens perished when the newly built Gasconade Bridge collapsed on Nov 1, 1855. The St. Louisans were traveling by train to Jefferson City to attend inauguration festivities there. Those who perished included Thomas O´Flaherty, the father of Kate Chopin, and the Reverend John Teasdale, the grandfather of Sara Teasdale.
