Event: Women´s Auxiliary Army Corps Formed Category: Politics and Government Brief Description: On May 27, 1943, more than 50 women appeared at the Federal Building, eager to join the Army. The women were applying for the 29 places allotted to Missouri for the new Women´s Auxiliary Army Corps (WACs). This marked the first time the federal government offically permitted women to participate in the Army. In all, more than 2,000 St. Louis women volunteered for military service in World War II.
