Event: Lemp Brewery Sells at Auction Brief Description: The Lemp Brewery closed down operations as a result of Prohibition. Its complex of 18 buildings on 14 acres sat idle and was finally sold at auction on June 28, 1922. The sales price was $585,000, which was said to be only 8% of the estimated worth of the plant. William J. Lemp, Jr., owner of the brewery, never recovered from the decline of his business, and on December 29, 1922, he committed suicide at the brewery.
