Event: Zoo-Museum District Created Brief Description: Beginning in 1971, voters in the City of St Louis and St Louis County approved the establishment of the Zoo-Museum Tax District. The District was empowered to tax property owners to provide support for the St Louis Zoo and the St Louis Art Museum. Later additions were the Missouri Historical Society, St Louis Science Center, and Missouri Botanical Garden. The Zoo-Museum Tax District was conceived by Howard F. Baer, a long-time civic leader and president of the St. Louis Zoological Association. The District was, and remains, a national model for public funding of arts and cultural institutions.
