  Southwest Exploration Begins
Category:  St. Louis and the West
Brief Description:  At the request of Governor Wilkinson, who was secretly plotting with Aaron Burr to invade the Spanish territory, Zebulon M. Pike set out in 1806 from Fort Bellefontaine to explore the Spanish Southwest. Pike began his journey at the Missouri River, headed west across Kansas and then south towards the Spanish boundary. He was overtaken by Spanish troops near Sante Fe.
